Week of September 30 to October 4

Journalism
Students will continue editing student articles for the first issue of the Spartan Spectrum and will begin working on layout and design.

Advanced Writing
Revised drafts of the 1,000 word project is due Monday 9/30. Students will begin drafting pages for the Ordeal by Cheque project and will discuss the process for the novel writing project and the mini-lessons on NaNoWriter beginning on November 1st.

English 10
Students will review the short story unit on Monday and will complete the test on Tuesday 10/1. Students will begin discussing the idea of censorship in preparation for the novel Fahrenheit 451. The quiz for Vocabulary list #2 will be given on Friday 10/4.

Honors English 10
Students will review the short story unit on Monday and will complete the test on Wednesday 10/2. Students will begin discussing the idea of censorship in preparation for the novel Fahrenheit 451. The quiz for Vocabulary list #2 will be given on Friday 10/4.

Week of September 23 to September 27

Journalism
Students will submit articles for first issue of the Spartan Spectrum by Wednesday 9/25. Once articles are submitted from additional writers, journalism students will work as a class to edit all articles prior to design and layout.

Advanced Writing
Students will revise and edit initial drafts of the Picture's Worth a Thousand Words paper and resubmit the second draft on Monday 9/30. Students will begin developing outlines for the Ordeal by Cheque project. The Ordeal project will not be due until Wednesday 10/16, but smaller assignments will occur within that time period.

English 10
Students will finish reading "Contents of the Dead Man's Pocket" and will continue the unit by reading "A Problem." Students will be assigned a writing prompt about the value of literature, but the assignment will not be due until Wednesday 10/2. Vocabulary 2 Homework will be due Thursday 9/26 with a quiz to follow on Friday 10/4.

Honors English 10
Students will continue a discussion on varying levels of symbolism. Additional stories will introduce the idea of individual v. universal symbols.Vocabulary 1B homework will be due Thursday 9/26 with a quiz to follow on Friday 10/4. The Masque of the Red Death perspective paper due dates have been extended until Monday 9/30.

Week of September 16 to September 20

Journalism
Students will continue working on newspaper terminology and examples of newsworthiness in published stories. A quiz on terminology will be given on Friday 9/20. Initial articles for the first issue of the Spectrum must be submitted by Monday 9/23.

Advanced Writing
Students will submit their 1,000 word picture essays on Tuesday 9/17 and will begin the workshop process in class. Students will receive 3 grades: one for the initial draft, one for the workshop participation, and one for the edited submission.

English 10
Students will continue reading short stories and will focus on symbolism and perspective for a written assignment about Masque of the Red Death due on Monday 9/20. The vocabulary quiz for list 1 will be given on Friday 9/20.

Honors English 10
Students will submit projects for the Literary Device Project on Monday 9/16 and presentations will be scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. Vocabulary quizzes for Lesson 1A will be Friday 9/20. Short story readings will include Poe's Masque of the Red Death.

Week of September 9 to September 13

Journalism
Students will review information on the History of American Journalism and will also discuss prominent figures in the field. A quiz on this information will be given on Tuesday 9/10. "What is News?" assignments will be due Friday 9/13. A Spartan Spectrum meeting will be held on Wednesday 9/11 and all class members are required to attend, unless alternate arrangements are made prior to the meeting.

Advanced Writing
Students will continue working in class on mini-lessons designed to remove students from their comfort level. Specific topics in this unit includes word variety, sentence structure, observation techniques, etc.

English 10
Students will complete corrections to the Literary Terms and Devices quiz. Vocabulary homework for Lesson One will be due on Thursday 9/12 with a quiz to follow on Friday 9/20. In-class readings of short stories will continue throughout the week and individual worksheets will be given at the beginning of each new piece - the worksheets must be completed one day after the story is finished.

Honors English 10
Students will begin working on the Short Story unit to highlight the use of literary terms and devices in context. The Literary Terms and Devices visual project due Monday 9/16; presentations will be scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. Vocabulary homework for Lesson 1A will be due on Thursday 9/12 with a quiz to follow on Friday 9/20.

Week of September 3 to September 6

Journalism
Students will prepare a 3 minute biographical presentation on an American journalist whose work (in the past 20 years) has impacted the field. Presentations will be given on Friday 9/6. A quiz on the History of American Journalism and Prominent American Journalists will be reviewed on Friday and Monday with a quiz to follow on Tuesday 9/10.

Advanced Writing
Students will continue developing observational strategies in class. Homework will not be assigned until next week.

English 10
Students will review Literary Terms and will complete a matching/multiple choice quiz on Friday 9/6. The first lesson of vocabulary has been assigned and all homework for the list will be due Thursday 9/12. Students are also required to bring their literature books to class every day.

Honors English 10
Students will continue taking notes on Literary Terms and will be assigned a project on Friday 9/6; the project will require students to use visual images that represent 10 of the terms covered in class. In addition to the visuals, students will also choose two popular idioms and research their origins. Both parts of the assignment will be due Monday 9/16.
